Easy Kids Tofu and Broccoli (Lunch)

This is a super easy, go to lunch I make for my daughter. She loves Asian flavors, so this gets destroyed every time I serve it to her.

All you need is broccoli, tofu and Hoisin sauce. You can sub Oyster sauce for Hoisin, but Hoisin rules.

I put everything in a plastic colander inside a plastic bowl filled with some water. This way I can steam in the microwave.

I cut up some broccoli (or use frozen) and drizzle a little hoisin sauce over top.

Dice up some tofu (I use extra-firm)

Add the tofu, along with another drizzle of Hoisin, a small drizzle of sesame oil and a pinch of chinese 5 spice.

Cover it with plastic wrap (it'll stay without rubber bands or anything, from the steam generated) and steam it in the microwave (in my case 3 minutes, but microwaves vary).

Toss everything a few times, wait til it's cool enough for little fingers and serve!

This takes me 7 minutes, start to finish, until it's in her mouth.

  1. Is the tofu mushy when you make this? I hate the texture of tofu when I make it, even when I buy extra firm. No idea what I am doing wrong. I know I like tofu because I love it at Whole Food's salad bar and also in Amy's teriyaki bowls. When I make it I have to gag it down. Seriously, I gagged eating my grilled tofu last night.
    Help me SAHD, I'm sad.

  2. haha! don't be sad, be sahd! yeah, it can be mushy, but there are two things i have done to help it:

    1. slice it off the log into a few pieces (whatever you're using) and put them between a few paper towel layers and put a cutting board or something over them to squeeze some of the liquid out. it'll be a lot less mushy.

    2. after you do the above, fry it in a non-stick pan with oil or butter til browned. then dice it or whatever. it should be much, much less mushy than before.
